DIY Website Optimization, Step 4 – Domain Age and 301 Redirect Clip this story

DIY_Website_Optimization_and_Marketing_Domain Age_301 RedirectWhen is your domain name due to expire? The search engines–especially Google, rank websites with domain names that are registered for 5 years or longer higher than those registered for just one year. Why? If you only register it for a year at time, the search engines think that you might be just a temporary or even a “fly-by-night” business.

Does your website need a 301 redirect? Search engines often regard “www.yoursite.com” and “oursite.com” as two different websites unless you take specific measures to signal to them that they are the same site. The best way to handle this is to setup a permanent redirect (or a “301″ redirect) from one of these sites to the other.

To learn about either of these for your website, go to websitegrader.com, a free website analysis tool, enter your website address, and click “Generate Report”.  The report will show you when your domain age is expiring, and whether you have a 301 redirect in place.  You can either contact your domain name registrant to renew your domain name for more years, or have your webmaster do it.  If you find that you need a 301 redirect, you can either contact your website host, or ask your webmaster to do it for you.

Or you can contact us, and we can assist you.

Do you have other web tools you like to use or would like to suggest?

GoDaddy has been good a good host in our experience, but we do use others from time to time, such as IX Hosting. All seem to have their strengths and weaknesses. A lot of our clients already come in with GoDaddy accounts, so we keep them there.

GoDaddy is ok for domain name registration. Namecheap is far better. GoDaddy’s hosting is awful at best. Nobody should be recommending them as a host. And you should never, ever have your domain registration and hosting with the same provider.

Keep them separate. It makes changing hosting providers much easier.

Yes–we recommend GoDaddy to all our clients. And yes, domain names should be easy to remember–and include keywords if possible. Microsites are a great way to drive additional traffic to your site, if you can’t get all your important keywords in your main domain name.

We like to use GoDaddy, too! Yes, domain name should be short and easy to remember, but you can also create descriptive URLs that have keywords in them.

i always buy domain names at Godaddy or Moniker because they are the most reliable registrars-:’

  • http://smellycatproductions.com admin

We like to use Godaddy for domain registration as well as hosting, and recommend them to all our clients. We have used others over the years and found that Godaddy is the most reliable, and very responsive on the rare occasions we have a problem. Unlike other web design firms, we have all our clients register their own domain names and set up hosting, so they are “masters” of their own domain names and websites, instead of being held hostage by a webmaster or web designer (been there, done that–very aggravating). Godaddy is inexpensive, easy to work with, available 24/7, and will patiently walk you through any changes or additions you have to make to your website.

What company is the best Domain Registrar? i’ve heard that Godaddy and Moniker are the best.*,:
